History: |
I purchased my '87 YJ (2.5 liter) for $4700 in 1991, and it has been my daily driver ever since. As of Y2K it had 250,000 miles and everything on it was thoroughly worn out. Many years of offroading had taken it's toll. Multiple trips on the Rubicon, the Dusy Ershim Trail, the back roads of Baja -- not to mention a ton of road trips between southern California and Idaho. In Y2K the engine died and I decided I wasn't going to fix it again. It was time for a rebuild. And thus the story begins... |

| Transmission: | ||
|
Custom built, with heavy duty components. This is a 4 speed automatic transmission with 3.06 first gear and 0.70 overdrive. The -2 shift kit provides very posotive shifts. Custom built (low stall) torque converter pulls very strong at low rpms. The manual valve body means that this automatic transmission does not shift automatically. You drive it just like a manual transmission, without the clutch -- except that you can stay on the gas as you shift between gears. You control the shift points. I am very happy with this setup, I think it gives the benifits of both an automatic and a manual.

After weighting the front and rear of the jeep, the leaf springs were custom built by Deaver Springs to provide 2" lift. The leaf-pack includes 9 leaf springs, triple military wrap design, with anti-friction shims. The shackle reversal moved the front axle forward about 1.5 inches. Front spring hanger is mounted up high under the front bumper for maximum approach angle. Both front and rear shackle mounts are tubed through the frame. Custom built shock hoops provide for Rancho 9000's (9012 front, 9116 rear). Extended bump stops and limiting straps keep things in control. Running with no sway bar and no track bar -- the jeep handles great on road and offroad.
